What's the best growth plan for a SaaS business with no budget?
With no budget, four moves carry a SaaS: direct outreach to 100 named accounts, answering the question your product solves in public, one honest comparison page against the tool people already use, and warm intros from your last three jobs. Budget 8–10 hours a week; expect first conversations in week one and first paying customers in weeks three to six.

| Move | Hours a week | First result |
|---|---|---|
| Outreach to 100 named accounts | 4–6 | Replies in 3–5 days |
| Answering questions in public | 3 | Traffic in 2–4 weeks |
| One comparison page | One day, once | Search traffic in 6–12 weeks |
| Warm intros from past colleagues | 2, once | Calls in a week |
| Referral ask after every win | 15 minutes | Compounds from month two |
Do this
The steps, in order.
- Step 1
Name 100 accounts, not a filter
Write down 100 companies by name that plausibly have the problem. Find one human at each. Send five lines asking about the problem, never pitching the product. Twenty replies teaches you more than a month of analytics.
- Step 2
Answer in public where the question gets asked
Find ten threads from the last 90 days on Reddit, Stack Overflow or a niche forum. Write a genuinely useful answer on each. Mention your product only when it is the honest answer. Set up F5Bot so new threads reach you free.
- Step 3
Publish one comparison page
Pick the tool prospects mention most on calls. Write an honest side-by-side including where the incumbent wins. '[Incumbent] alternative' traffic is small but converts better than anything else you can publish this early.
- Step 4
Ask 30 former colleagues something specific
Not 'any intros?'. Ask 'do you know anyone doing X at a company of Y size?'. Specific asks get answered; vague ones get ignored.
- Step 5
Make referral the last step of onboarding
After a customer's first success moment, ask for one introduction. Automate the prompt so it happens every time rather than when you remember.
Worth knowing
The bits people get wrong.
The mistake with a zero budget is spreading thin: a bit of content, a bit of social, a bit of SEO, none of it far enough to work. Pick the top two moves and do them for six weeks before adding a third.
Nothing here needs paid tooling. Contact finding, sending, alerting and publishing all have workable free tiers at this volume. The constraint is founder hours, so plan around a realistic 8–10 a week rather than an aspirational 25.
Questions
Follow-up questions.
How long before a zero-budget plan produces revenue?
Direct outreach and warm intros produce conversations in the first week and, for most B2B SaaS with a working product, first paying customers between weeks three and six. Content and comparison pages take six to twelve weeks to show search traffic.
Should I run ads instead once I have a small budget?
Not first. Ads need a converting page and a known customer value to be anything other than a donation. Spend the first budget on contact data and sending tools that make outreach faster, then on ads once you know what a customer is worth.
