Short answer

How do I get my first 100 customers?

Get the first 10 by hand through direct outreach and warm intros — expect four to eight weeks. Get 10 to 40 by making the one channel that produced those first customers repeatable. Get 40 to 100 by doubling down on it and adding referral. Most businesses reach 100 in six to nine months on under $500 a month.

The three stretches to 100 customers
StretchHowTypical time
0 → 10Manual outreach, warm intros, communities4–8 weeks
10 → 40Make the channel that worked repeatable2–3 months
40 → 100Double the working channel, add referral3–4 months

Do this

The steps, in order.

  1. Step 1

Do things that do not scale for the first ten

Hand-written emails, personal demos, manual onboarding. The goal is not efficiency, it is learning exactly why someone pays and exactly which words made them.

  2. Step 2

Write down where each of the first ten came from

One line per customer. The pattern in that list is your channel. Most founders skip this and then guess for the next six months.

  3. Step 3

Turn the winning path into a weekly routine

If five of ten came from one subreddit, the routine is a set number of genuine answers a week. If they came from outreach, it is a set number of named accounts a week.

  4. Step 4

Add referral once you have twenty happy customers

Ask at the success moment, not at signup. One introduction per happy customer roughly halves the effort needed for the next fifty.

  5. Step 5

Only then add a second channel

Adding channels before the first one is boring and predictable is how businesses stall at thirty customers.

Worth knowing

The bits people get wrong.

The jump that stops most people is 10 to 40. It is where manual work stops fitting in the week but the channel is not yet reliable enough to lean on. The fix is narrowing, not broadening: same channel, same message, more volume.

Churn matters from about customer 30 onward. If a tenth leave every month, you are refilling a bucket rather than filling one. Fixing the reason people leave is usually faster than finding replacements.

Questions

Follow-up questions.

How long does it usually take to get 100 customers?

Six to nine months is typical for a small B2B software product with a founder working on it consistently. Lower-priced consumer products can move faster; anything with a long sales cycle takes longer.

Do I need a big audience first?

No. The first hundred come from direct contact and from being present where the question is asked. An audience helps later, and building one is slower than talking to people who already have the problem.
