What is answer engine optimisation (AEO)?
Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is writing and structuring content so AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews can extract it and quote it directly in an answer. It shares roots with SEO but optimises for citation inside a generated response rather than for a ranked link and a click.

| Aspect | SEO | AEO |
|---|---|---|
| Success metric | Rank position, click-through | Citation, mention inside an answer |
| Ideal content shape | Comprehensive long-form | Short, self-contained answer blocks |
| Where the answer sits | Below the fold, after intro | First 40–60 words |
| Key crawlers | Googlebot | GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended |
| Measurement tooling | Mature (Search Console, GA) | Immature, mostly manual checks |
Do this
The steps, in order.
- Step 1
Understand who the reader actually is
In AEO, the immediate 'reader' of a page is often a language model extracting a fact, with a human reading only the summarised output. Write so that a fact stands alone if lifted out of context.
- Step 2
Lead with the direct answer
State the number, rule or step first, in one or two sentences, before adding nuance. Models tend to quote openings, so front-loading the answer increases the odds it's the part that gets used.
- Step 3
Structure with headings, tables and steps
Plain paragraphs are harder to extract cleanly than a table row or a numbered step. Use structure deliberately, not just for readability but because it maps to how extraction works.
- Step 4
Allow the AI crawlers
Check robots.txt permits GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended. Blocking them (sometimes a CMS default) removes you from consideration entirely regardless of content quality.
- Step 5
Keep facts current and specific
Assistants favour content with real, recent numbers over vague claims. Revisit and update figures at least once a year so pages don't go stale and stop being trusted sources.
Worth knowing
The bits people get wrong.
AEO isn't a replacement for SEO — most of the underlying work (clear writing, real expertise, a crawlable site) helps both. The difference is in shape and framing: SEO content can build an argument over several paragraphs before the payoff; AEO content works best when the payoff comes first because a model may only ever surface one sentence of it.
The term is still settling, and some people use 'GEO' (generative engine optimisation) interchangeably. Both describe the same practical goal: being the source an AI system pulls from when it generates an answer.
Questions
Follow-up questions.
Is AEO a proven discipline or still emerging?
It's emerging. There's no mature measurement standard equivalent to Search Console, and best practices are inferred from observing what gets cited rather than from a documented ranking algorithm. Treat current advice as a reasonable rule of thumb, not settled science.
Do I need separate content for AEO and SEO?
Usually not separate content, but often a different structure: lead with the direct answer, add a table, keep the intro short. Most well-written question-and-answer pages serve both purposes without duplication.
Does AEO replace the need for a website?
No. AI assistants still need a crawlable, indexed source to cite, so a website (or at minimum a set of public pages) remains the foundation. AEO changes how those pages are written, not whether you need them.
