Amplitude vs Mixpanel
Mixpanel gets a small team to useful funnels fastest and costs less early on. Amplitude pulls ahead when you have many teams, need governance over event taxonomy, and want its behavioural cohort and pathfinding analysis.
- No affiliate links
- Public pricing only
- Updated by hand
These two have converged over the years. Both do funnels, retention, cohorts and dashboards well, and both have free tiers that cover an early-stage product.
The decision usually comes down to organisational maturity rather than features. One person answering questions? Mixpanel. Twelve squads arguing about definitions? Amplitude's governance tools matter.

The differences
Where they actually diverge.
Pick one
Which one fits you.
Choose Amplitude if
- Multiple teams share one analytics workspace
- You need a governed event taxonomy people stick to
- You'll use experimentation from the same vendor
Choose Mixpanel if
- You're a small team that wants answers this week
- Predictable, published pricing matters
- Reports need to be built by non-engineers
When neither is the answer
If you also want session replay and feature flags on one bill, look at PostHog instead of adding a second and third tool around either of these.
Questions
Common questions.
Do they measure the same things differently?
Yes. Amplitude bills on monthly tracked users; Mixpanel bills on events. The same product can look cheap in one and expensive in the other depending on how chatty your instrumentation is.
How hard is switching later?
The tracking calls are similar, and a CDP such as Segment or RudderStack in the middle makes switching a config change. Historical data doesn't move, so you lose your comparison baseline.
