Best analytics tools for ecommerce: which one should you pick?
Google Analytics 4 is free and covers most ecommerce reporting needs, but its ecommerce reports are limited without extra configuration. Triple Whale and Lifetimely add ecommerce-specific profitability and cohort views most stores actually want, at added monthly cost.

| Triple Whale | DTC brands wanting profit and ad spend consolidated daily | From about $129 a month |
| Lifetimely | Stores focused on customer lifetime value and cohorts | From about $29 a month |
| Shopify Analytics (built-in) | Shopify stores wanting basic reporting with zero setup | Included with Shopify plans; deeper reports need Shopify Plus |

Free web analytics tells you traffic and conversion rate. It rarely tells you profit — after ad spend, cost of goods, shipping and returns — which is the number that actually decides whether a campaign or product line is working. That gap is why a second layer of ecommerce-specific analytics tools exists.
Below are the tools that fill that gap, from free baseline tracking to paid platforms built specifically around Shopify and similar store data, with a note on where each one's numbers can mislead you if you don't cross-check them.
How we judged them
What matters when you're small.
True profit vs revenue reporting
Look for tools that pull in cost of goods and ad spend to show contribution margin per order, not just top-line revenue, which can look healthy while margins shrink.
Multi-channel ad spend attribution
If you run ads on more than one platform, check whether the tool consolidates spend and attributed revenue across all of them in one view rather than requiring manual reconciliation.
Cohort and repeat purchase tracking
Customer lifetime value matters more than first-order conversion for most stores. Look for cohort views showing repeat purchase rate by acquisition month or channel.
Setup effort and data accuracy
Some tools require pixel and API setup across every ad platform to work correctly. Budget real setup time and expect a few weeks of data discrepancies while tracking settles.
The picks
What each one is actually good at.
Google Analytics 4
FreeBest for: Free baseline traffic and conversion tracking
Necessary as a baseline even if you add a paid tool on top. Ecommerce reports require proper event configuration to be useful, and the interface is genuinely harder to learn than the old Universal Analytics.
Triple Whale
From about $129 a monthBest for: DTC brands wanting profit and ad spend consolidated daily
Strong at pulling ad spend across Meta, Google and TikTok into one profitability dashboard updated daily. Priced per order volume, so it gets expensive fast for high-volume stores.
Lifetimely
From about $29 a monthBest for: Stores focused on customer lifetime value and cohorts
Cohort and repeat purchase reporting is clearer and cheaper than most competitors'. Ad spend attribution is thinner than Triple Whale's if that's your main need.
Shopify Analytics (built-in)
Included with Shopify plans; deeper reports need Shopify PlusBest for: Shopify stores wanting basic reporting with zero setup
Genuinely useful for order and product-level reporting with no configuration. Marketing attribution and cross-channel ad data are limited without upgrading or adding a third-party tool.
Hotjar
Free tier available, paid from about $32 a monthBest for: Understanding on-site behaviour behind the conversion numbers
Session recordings and heatmaps explain why a page underperforms in a way pure numbers can't. It's a behaviour tool, not a revenue or profit reporting tool, so pair it with one of the above.
Segment
Free tier available, paid from about $120 a monthBest for: Larger stores needing clean data piped to multiple tools
Solves the problem of inconsistent event tracking across GA4, ad platforms and email tools by centralizing data collection once. Overkill and an unnecessary cost for a store under a few hundred orders a month.
Skip
What we'd leave alone.
- Any analytics tool claiming 'true attribution' without explaining its attribution model — multi-touch attribution is inherently an estimate, and vague marketing claims here are a red flag.
- Dashboard tools that only pull data from one ad platform if you run ads on more than one — you'll end up manually combining reports anyway.
- Free trial-only tools with no month-to-month plan after — you need at least a full sales cycle of data to judge whether the numbers are trustworthy.
Questions
Common questions.
Is GA4 alone enough for a small ecommerce store?
For a store under a few hundred orders a month with a single ad channel, GA4 configured with ecommerce events is usually enough. Add a paid tool once you're running ads on multiple platforms and need consolidated profit reporting.
How accurate is ad spend attribution really?
No tool gives you perfect attribution because of iOS tracking limitations and cross-device behaviour. Treat attributed revenue numbers as directional, and cross-check big decisions against actual order data.
What's the difference between Triple Whale and Lifetimely?
Triple Whale focuses on daily profitability and ad spend consolidation; Lifetimely focuses on customer lifetime value and repeat purchase cohorts. Some stores use both for different questions.
Do I need Segment if I'm already using Shopify and GA4?
Only if you're piping data into several additional tools (email, ads, warehouse) and keep hitting inconsistent event definitions between them. Below that scale it adds cost without a clear benefit.
How long before profitability numbers stabilize after setup?
Expect two to four weeks for ad spend and cost of goods data to sync consistently across platforms, especially if you're backfilling historical orders.
