The best AI marketing tools: which one should you pick?
For most small teams the useful AI marketing stack is four tools, not fourteen: ChatGPT or Claude for drafting and research (from $0-20 a month), an AI-assisted email tool your ESP already includes, a research tool that reads real search data, and one AI writing tool inside your CMS. Everything past that duplicates work you are already paying for.

There are well over a thousand tools marketed as AI marketing software, and the overwhelming majority are a prompt template sitting on top of an OpenAI or Anthropic API call. You can reproduce most of them in ChatGPT in about four minutes. That is not a criticism of the category — it is the fastest way to work out which subscriptions are worth paying for.
The tools worth money do one of three things a general chat model cannot: they hold your data, they connect to a channel and act, or they read something the model cannot see, like live search volume or your own analytics. Everything on this list is here because it does at least one of those.
Prices below are the entry paid tier as advertised in 2026. Check before you buy — this category re-prices constantly.
How we judged them
What matters when you're small.
Does it hold your context, or do you re-paste it every time
The difference between a useful AI marketing tool and a wrapper is whether it remembers your product, audience and past decisions. Re-explaining your business at the start of every session eats more time than the tool saves.
Does it act, or only suggest
A tool that drafts an email is worth far less than one that drafts it, schedules it and reports what happened. Count the manual copy-paste steps left after the AI finishes.
Is it reading real data or guessing
Models are confident about search volume, competitor pricing and market size and frequently wrong. Anything making a numerical claim should be connected to a live data source you can click through to.
What happens on the free tier
Most of these have a free plan that is genuinely enough for a solo founder. Run four weeks on free before paying anything — the usage pattern you predict is rarely the one you get.
Does it duplicate something you already pay for
Your email platform, CMS and ad accounts have all shipped AI features. Check those first; a surprising number of AI marketing purchases replace a feature already sitting unused in an existing subscription.
The picks
What each one is actually good at.
ChatGPT (Plus)
Free tier, or about $20 a month for PlusBest for: General drafting, research and reasoning across everything
The default. Broad, fast, and with projects and custom instructions it holds enough context to stop being a blank box. Weakest on anything requiring live, verifiable numbers — it will still invent a search volume if you let it.
Claude
Free tier, or about $20 a month for ProBest for: Long-form drafting and editing that has to sound human
Noticeably better prose than most alternatives and handles long documents without losing the thread. Fewer integrations than ChatGPT, so it works best as a writing surface rather than a hub.
gtm.help
Free plan, paid from $39 a monthBest for: Deciding what to do next, rather than writing it
Ours, so treat the verdict accordingly. It reads your site, ranks growth plays against your stage, budget and channels, and unlocks the next one when you finish one. Use it for prioritisation; use a general model for drafting.
Jasper
From about $39 a user a monthBest for: Marketing teams that need brand-voice consistency across many writers
The brand-voice and template layer is real and saves time when five people are producing content. For one or two people it is expensive relative to Claude plus a good prompt file.
Surfer SEO
From about $99 a monthBest for: Briefing content that has to rank in Google
Connects AI drafting to live SERP data, which fixes the biggest weakness of writing with a raw model. Hard to justify below roughly four published pages a month.
Clay
Free tier, paid from about $149 a monthBest for: B2B outbound research and list enrichment
The strongest example of AI doing work you genuinely cannot do by hand: enriching thousands of prospect records from dozens of sources. Steep learning curve and pointless without an outbound motion already running.
Klaviyo AI
Included; Klaviyo from about $45 a month at 1,500 contactsBest for: Ecommerce email and SMS already running on Klaviyo
Subject-line generation, send-time optimisation and predicted lifetime value, all sitting on your own purchase data. Included rather than an extra purchase, which is the point — check your ESP before buying anything standalone.
Descript
Free tier, paid from about $19 a monthBest for: Turning recorded calls, podcasts and demos into content
Edit video and audio by editing the transcript. For anyone repurposing sales calls or webinars into clips and posts it removes the single biggest bottleneck. Irrelevant if you publish no audio or video.
Perplexity
Free tier, Pro about $20 a monthBest for: Research where you need the sources, not just the answer
Every claim comes with a link you can check, which makes it the right tool for competitor and market research. Not a writing tool — the output style is deliberately flat.
Skip
What we'd leave alone.
- Any tool whose entire pitch is 'generate 100 blog posts a month'. Google's helpful-content systems and every AI answer engine are explicitly built to filter that output, and publishing it damages the pages you wrote properly.
- Standalone AI social-caption generators. Your scheduler almost certainly ships this free, and captions are the cheapest thing to write anyway.
- AI 'audience persona' tools that produce fictional customers. Ten real customer interviews beat a synthetic persona every time and cost nothing but a fortnight of asking.
- Bundles selling access to fifty AI tools for one price. You will use two and manage fifty logins and fifty privacy policies.
- Anything that needs your ad account write-access on day one. Give read-access, watch what it recommends for a month, then decide.
Questions
Common questions.
What is the minimum AI marketing stack for a solo founder?
One general model (ChatGPT or Claude, about $20 a month), whatever AI features your email platform already includes, and a research tool with real sources like Perplexity's free tier. That is roughly $20 a month total and covers drafting, research and email.
Are free AI marketing tools good enough?
For under about 20 pieces of content a month, yes. The free tiers of ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity cover drafting and research. Paid tiers mainly buy speed, longer context and higher usage limits, not better marketing judgement.
Will AI-written content hurt my search rankings?
Not because it was AI-written. It hurts when it is generic, unverified and adds nothing a reader could not get elsewhere, which is the default output if you publish first drafts. Add your own data, examples and opinions before publishing.
How much should a small business spend on AI marketing tools?
Between $0 and $60 a month for the first six months. Spend the difference on one hour a week of customer interviews. Tools scale output; interviews change what you are outputting, which matters more early.
Which AI marketing tool replaces an agency?
None of them, but the combination changes what an agency is for. AI covers drafting, research and first-pass analysis cheaply. What it does not cover is judgement about which market to attack and accountability for the result.
