Most early-stage startups don't need a full helpdesk — they need somewhere that isn't a founder's personal inbox to handle support emails, so nothing gets lost and more than one person can answer. A full ticketing system with SLAs and routing rules is solving a problem you probably don't have yet.
The right choice depends mostly on volume: under a few dozen support conversations a week, a shared inbox is enough. Past that, or once you need a public help centre and live chat, a proper helpdesk earns its cost.
How we judged them
What matters when you're small.
Shared inbox vs full ticketing system
A shared inbox (assign, snooze, comment internally) is enough until you need SLA tracking, routing rules or multiple support channels merged into one view.
Live chat and chatbot pricing
Many tools charge extra, sometimes a lot extra, for live chat and AI chatbot features beyond the base helpdesk. Check what's actually included before assuming a low headline price.
Self-serve help centre included
A basic knowledge base that deflects repeat questions pays for itself quickly. Check whether it's bundled or a separate paid add-on.
Setup and migration effort
Moving support history and macros/canned responses between tools is rarely painless. Weigh switching cost against the improvement, especially past your first tool.
The picks
What each one is actually good at.
Front
From about $19 a month per seatBest for: Small teams wanting a shared inbox that feels like email
Closest to 'Gmail but shared', with internal comments and assignment that feel natural rather than like a ticketing system. No free tier, and it gets pricier as you add seats and channels.
Help Scout
From about $22 a month per userBest for: Startups wanting a proper help centre without helpdesk complexity
A genuinely simple helpdesk with a well-built knowledge base included. Feature set is intentionally more limited than Zendesk or Intercom, which is exactly why it's easier to run with a small team.
Zendesk
From about $19 a month per agent (Support-only plan)Best for: Startups expecting to scale support significantly
The industry standard for good reason — extremely capable routing, reporting and integrations. Pricing scales up fast once you want automation and AI features, and it's more configuration than most early teams need.
Intercom
From about $39 a month per seatBest for: Product-led startups wanting support plus in-app messaging
Strongest at in-app messaging and proactive support tied to product usage. Pricing has grown complex with usage-based AI features (Fin) layered on — read the pricing page carefully before committing.
Crisp
Free for basic use, paid from about $25 a monthBest for: Budget-conscious startups wanting live chat plus a shared inbox
Genuinely usable free tier including live chat, which most competitors charge extra for. Interface feels a step below the bigger players in polish, but it's hard to beat on price for an early-stage team.
Plain
Free tier available, paid from about $18 a month per seatBest for: Technical startups wanting a support tool built for engineers
Built specifically for software companies, with Slack and API-first workflows that suit a technical team better than a traditional helpdesk UI. Smaller ecosystem of integrations than Zendesk or Intercom.
Skip
What we'd leave alone.
- A full enterprise helpdesk (Zendesk Suite, Intercom's higher tiers) before you're handling more than a few dozen conversations a week — you'll spend more time configuring than replying.
- Any support tool without a shared 'someone's already replying to this' indicator once more than one person handles support — it causes duplicate or contradictory replies fast.
- AI chatbot add-ons before your help centre has enough content for the bot to actually answer from — an empty knowledge base makes the bot worse than useless.
Questions
Common questions.
When do I need a real helpdesk instead of a shared inbox?
Roughly once you're handling more than 50 conversations a week, need reporting on response times, or have more than two or three people answering support.
Is live chat worth adding early on?
Only if your product has a moment where users genuinely need real-time help (onboarding, checkout). Otherwise it creates an expectation of instant replies you may not be staffed to meet.
Do I need a public help centre from day one?
Not from day one, but as soon as the same three questions keep arriving, a handful of help centre articles will deflect a meaningful share of them.
How much do AI support features actually cost?
Increasingly usage-based rather than flat — Intercom's Fin, for example, charges per resolution. Budget carefully and check whether it's charged even when the AI answer is wrong.
Can I switch from a shared inbox to a full helpdesk later without losing history?
Most tools support CSV or API export of past conversations, but formatting rarely transfers perfectly — expect some manual tidy-up, and export early rather than waiting until you've fully decided to switch.
