Short answer

How long does SEO take to work?

On a domain with no existing authority, expect the first pages to appear in search results within 2-4 weeks, meaningful ranking movement in 6-12 weeks, and traffic worth mentioning in a board update at 4-6 months. Competitive terms with established incumbents can take 12-18 months. Low-competition, specific questions move faster than broad keywords.

Do this

The steps, in order.

  1. Step 1

Pick 10-20 specific questions, not broad keywords

'Best CRM' will not move for a year or more. 'CRM for a 5-person estate agency' can rank in weeks because almost nobody has written the specific answer.

  2. Step 2

Publish consistently rather than in one burst

One page a week for three months beats twelve pages in one week and then nothing. Search engines reward sites that keep adding relevant, useful content.

  3. Step 3

    Fix technical basics once, early

Page speed, mobile rendering, a working sitemap and no broken internal links. This is a day of work that removes a ceiling on everything else.

  4. Step 4

Get a handful of real links, not hundreds of junk ones

Five links from sites your buyers actually read outweigh fifty from directories nobody visits. Guest posts and genuine mentions work; bought link packages usually don't.

  5. Step 5

    Check impressions before rankings

Google Search Console shows impressions rising weeks before rankings or clicks do. Rising impressions on the right queries means the plan is working even if traffic still looks flat.

Worth knowing

The bits people get wrong.

SEO is slow because search engines re-crawl and re-evaluate pages on their own schedule, not yours, and because ranking well usually means outranking pages that have had months or years of a head start. Nothing legitimate compresses that into days.

The biggest timeline mistake is judging a page after two weeks. Most pages take 8-16 weeks to settle into their eventual ranking position, and some keep climbing slowly for a year. Track a page's trajectory over quarters, not days.

New domains face an extra delay sometimes called a 'sandbox' period, roughly the first 3-6 months, where even good content ranks lower than it will later. This is ordinary practitioner experience rather than a documented Google policy, but it is consistent enough to plan around: expect the first quarter to look slower than the second.

Questions

Follow-up questions.

Can I speed up SEO with paid tools or more content?

More consistent, genuinely useful content helps more than any tool. Volume alone without quality tends to plateau; a smaller number of thorough, specific pages usually outperforms a large number of thin ones.

Is 6 months a guarantee of results?

No. It's a typical timeline for seeing traffic worth discussing, not a guarantee. Competitive niches, thin content or a technically broken site can push that out well past a year.

Should I pause SEO and try paid ads while waiting?

Many businesses run both: ads for immediate volume, SEO for the compounding long-term channel. Don't drop SEO the moment ads work, because ad costs rarely fall over time and SEO traffic gets cheaper the longer it runs.

Does site age matter more than content quality?

Content quality and relevance to the specific question matter more day to day. Site age helps at the margins, mainly by giving older domains a trust head start, but a new domain with sharp, specific answers can still outrank an old one with vague content.
