Short answer

How do I get my company cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity?

AI assistants cite pages that answer one question clearly in the first 40–60 words, back it with a specific number or table, and are crawlable by GPTBot, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot. Most companies see first citations 4–8 weeks after publishing 10–20 such pages, not from one hero piece.

Do this

The steps, in order.

  1. Step 1

Check your robots.txt allows AI crawlers

GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended must not be blocked, or none of the rest matters. Check your robots.txt directly rather than assuming — many CMS defaults block these by accident.

  2. Step 2

Write one page per question, not one page per keyword

Assistants answer questions, so structure content as a question and a direct answer, not a topic essay. 'How much should I spend on ads' beats 'A Guide to Advertising Budgets'.

  3. Step 3

Put the answer in the first 50 words

Assistants often quote the opening paragraph. Lead with the number or the rule, then explain it — don't build up to the answer after three paragraphs of context.

  4. Step 4

Add a table with real figures

Tables are easy for models to extract and quote accurately. A table with 4–6 rows of specific numbers is more citable than the same information written as prose.

  5. Step 5

    Publish in volume, not once

One excellent page rarely gets cited; 10–20 pages covering the different phrasings of questions in your space compound. Track citations monthly and expand the topics that get picked up.

Worth knowing

The bits people get wrong.

Being cited by an AI assistant behaves differently from ranking in Google: there's no click-through to optimise for, and the reward is being named as a source inside someone else's answer, sometimes with a link and sometimes without. That means the content has to be genuinely reusable — a fact, a number, a clear rule — rather than persuasive copy.

The businesses getting cited most in 2025–2026 tend to publish plain, well-structured answer pages rather than long guides, because assistants extract a paragraph or a table row, not an entire article. Depth still matters for trust, but the citable unit is small.

You can't fully control which sources get picked; assistants weight authority, recency and clarity. Treat this as a compounding content programme measured over months, not a single optimisation task.

Questions

Follow-up questions.

Is AEO the same as SEO?

They overlap but aren't identical. SEO optimises for ranking and clicks in a search results page; AEO optimises for being extracted and quoted inside a generated answer, where there may be no click at all. Both reward clear, well-structured, factual content, so most of the work transfers.

How do I know if ChatGPT or Perplexity has cited my site?

Ask the assistant your target question directly and check the sources it lists, or search your brand name plus 'perplexity' or 'chatgpt' periodically. There's no dashboard yet as reliable as Google Search Console, so manual checks every few weeks are normal.

Do I need schema markup to be cited?

It helps but isn't required — FAQ and Article schema make the structure explicit for crawlers, which reduces the chance of misparsing. The bigger factor is still whether the content itself answers a question directly and clearly.

How long does it take to see AI citations after publishing?

Most sites see first citations within 4–8 weeks of publishing a batch of question-and-answer pages, assuming crawlers are allowed and the site is already indexed. Isolated single pages can take longer or never get picked up.
