How do I get my first sales on a new Shopify store?
Most new Shopify stores get their first 10-20 sales from three sources: a personal network post with a discount code, 15-20 micro-influencer gifting outreaches, and a $200-300 paid test on Meta or TikTok. Budget three to four weeks. Expect a 1-3% conversion rate on cold traffic and higher from warm sources, so warm-up first.

| Source | Cost | Typical time to first sale |
|---|---|---|
| Personal network + discount code | $0 | 1-3 days |
| Micro-influencer gifting (1k-20k followers) | Cost of product | 1-2 weeks |
| Owned email list from pre-launch | $0 | Launch day |
| Small paid test ($200-300) | $200-300 | 3-7 days |
| Local Facebook groups / marketplace | $0 | 1 week |
| TikTok organic product videos | $0 | 2-4 weeks |
Do this
The steps, in order.
- Step 1
Build a 100-name launch list before the store opens
Text or email everyone who'd plausibly buy, plus a real discount code. This isn't vanity — it gives you your first reviews and photos, both of which do more for conversion than any ad.
- Step 2
Send free product to 15-20 micro-influencers
Look for 1,000-20,000 followers in your niche, not follower count alone. Send the product with a simple ask: post if you like it, no obligation. Expect 20-30% to actually post.
- Step 3
Fix the product page before spending on traffic
Real photos, a benefit-led headline, three specific bullet points and shipping/returns info above the fold. Traffic to a weak page is money spent teaching yourself nothing.
- Step 4
Run one $200-300 paid test, one platform only
Meta or TikTok, one audience, one creative angle. You're testing whether $10 gets you a $1 click that converts, not building a funnel yet.
- Step 5
Capture email on every visit, even non-buyers
A 10% first-order discount pop-up plus abandoned-cart email recovers 5-10% of people who almost bought. This becomes your cheapest channel by month three.
- Step 6
Ask every buyer for a review at day 7
Automate one email asking for a photo review. Ten reviews change your conversion rate more than any single ad does.
Worth knowing
The bits people get wrong.
The instinct with a new store is to launch ads immediately. That's backwards — a store with zero reviews, generic stock photos and no social proof converts at well under 1%, so the first $300 mostly buys you data about a bad page, not customers.
Warm channels (your network, gifted influencers, pre-launch email) exist to generate the reviews and user photos that make cold traffic convert later. Sequence matters more than budget here.
Micro-influencer gifting works because smaller accounts have real engagement and will post for free product when nano and mid-tier accounts expect payment. Treat the first 20 sends as a numbers game, not a negotiation.
Once you have 10+ reviews and one working paid angle, that's when a repeatable budget makes sense — not before. Spending to scale an unproven page just moves the same low conversion rate to a bigger number.
Questions
Follow-up questions.
How much should I spend to launch a new Shopify store?
$300-500 covers a small paid test and any gifting product cost. Most of the first sales should come from free channels — personal network, influencer gifting and organic social — before you spend on ads.
Should I discount heavily for launch?
A 10-15% launch discount is enough to move people who are already considering it. Deeper discounts train early customers to expect them and hurt margin without proportionally increasing sales.
How long before a new store gets consistent sales?
Six to twelve weeks is typical if you're running gifting, one paid channel and email capture in parallel. Stores relying on organic social alone often take three to six months.
What conversion rate should I expect at launch?
Cold traffic typically converts at 0.5-1.5% with no reviews, rising to 2-3% once you have 10+ reviews and clear photos. Warm traffic from your own network converts much higher, often 5-10%.
