How do I increase average order value for my ecommerce store?
Average order value rises fastest from a free-shipping threshold set 15-20% above your current AOV, a bundle of two or three complementary products at a small discount, and a post-purchase upsell offer shown right after checkout. Together these typically add 10-20% to AOV within a month with no extra ad spend.

| Tactic | Effort | Typical AOV lift |
|---|---|---|
| Free-shipping threshold above current AOV | Low | 8-15% |
| Product bundles (2-3 items, 10% off) | Medium | 10-20% |
| Post-purchase upsell page | Medium (app) | 3-8% |
| Cart page add-ons under $15 | Low | 5-10% |
| Volume discount (buy 2, save 10%) | Low | 5-12% |
| Gift-with-purchase over a spend level | Low | 5-10% |
Do this
The steps, in order.
- Step 1
Calculate your current AOV first
Total revenue divided by number of orders over the last 90 days. Every tactic below should be measured against this number, not guessed.
- Step 2
Set a free-shipping threshold 15-20% above AOV
If AOV is $50, set free shipping at $60-65. Show the gap ('add $12 for free shipping') on the cart page, not just the threshold amount.
- Step 3
Bundle your best-seller with a natural add-on
Pick the product people already buy most and pair it with something complementary at 10% off the pair. This works better than bundling slow movers together.
- Step 4
Add a post-purchase upsell page
Show one relevant offer on the order confirmation page, after payment is already captured. Conversion on this single offer is often 5-15% because the buying decision is already made.
- Step 5
Add three low-price items to the cart page
Items under $15 next to the checkout button convert as impulse adds. Keep it to three options — more creates decision friction and lowers overall conversion.
- Step 6
Review AOV monthly, not weekly
AOV moves slowly and is noisy week to week. A monthly view against the same period last year tells you whether the tactics are actually working.
Worth knowing
The bits people get wrong.
Raising AOV is usually cheaper than acquiring more customers, because it doesn't touch your cost per click or conversion rate — it changes what happens after someone has already decided to buy.
The free-shipping threshold is the single highest-leverage change most stores haven't made. People will add a second item worth less than the shipping cost just to avoid paying for shipping, which is an established behaviour pattern, not a trick.
Bundles work best when they solve a next question the customer already has, like 'what goes with this'. Bundles built purely to move slow inventory usually just discount margin without changing behaviour.
Don't run more than two or three AOV tactics at once for the first month — you won't know which one moved the number, and stacked discounts (bundle plus free shipping plus upsell) can erode margin faster than the AOV lift covers.
Questions
Follow-up questions.
What's a good average order value for a small ecommerce store?
It varies hugely by category — $30-50 for beauty and low-cost consumables, $80-150 for apparel, $150+ for home goods. Compare against your own category benchmarks rather than a single number.
Does a free-shipping threshold cost me money?
Only if the extra item people add doesn't cover the shipping cost. Test the threshold at 15-20% above current AOV first; most stores find the added item revenue outweighs the shipping given away.
Should I use post-purchase upsell apps?
Yes if your platform supports it — on Shopify, apps like this add a single offer after checkout with no extra risk to the main sale, since payment is already confirmed.
How often should I change my bundles?
Every 6-8 weeks, or whenever a bundle's conversion rate falls below 2% of cart views. Stale bundles stop performing once repeat customers have already seen them.
