What are social media monitoring tools?
Social media monitoring tools watch public posts for keywords you choose and alert you when they appear. Free options — F5Bot, Google Alerts, native saved searches — cover Reddit, Hacker News, indexed pages and X, which is enough for most businesses under 200 mentions a week. Paid platforms start around $30–$100 a month and add Instagram, TikTok, historical archives, sentiment scoring and team inboxes.

Do this
The steps, in order.
- Step 1
Start with the free stack for 30 days
F5Bot for forums, Google Alerts for indexed pages, a saved search per keyword natively. Run it for a month and count how many relevant mentions you actually get. That number decides whether you need to pay for anything.
- Step 2
Only pay for a gap you can name
Valid reasons to upgrade: you need Instagram or TikTok, you need last year's data for a report, or more than one person handles replies. "It looks more professional" is not a reason.
- Step 3
Check the mention allowance, not the seat price
Most platforms price on mentions per month. A cheap plan that caps at 500 mentions will silently stop alerting mid-month. Estimate your volume from the free trial before committing to a year.
- Step 4
Test the alert latency
Post something on a public account containing your keyword and time how long the tool takes to notice. Anything over an hour is useless for complaints. Free alerts typically land in minutes for forums and hours for indexed pages.
Worth knowing
The bits people get wrong.
Categories overlap confusingly. "Social media management" tools schedule and publish; "monitoring" tools catch mentions; "listening" platforms analyse aggregate trends. Several products claim all three and are usually strongest at one. Buy for the job you do daily.
The single highest-return free tool for B2B and software is F5Bot, because Reddit threads asking for recommendations sit at the top of search results for years. A useful reply in one of those threads keeps sending visitors long after you wrote it.
Enterprise platforms charge for the archive and the compliance features, not the alerting. If nobody is asking you for a quarterly sentiment report, you are paying for a feature you will not open.
Questions
Follow-up questions.
What's the best free social media monitoring tool?
F5Bot for Reddit and Hacker News — it is genuinely free, emails within minutes, and covers where buying questions get asked. Pair it with Google Alerts for indexed pages.
Do I need a paid tool for Instagram or TikTok?
Effectively yes. Neither offers a usable free keyword alert, so a paid platform or manual daily checks are the only options.
Can one tool cover every network?
No platform covers everything well. Private groups, most of TikTok's comment layer and closed communities are outside all of them. Expect gaps and fill the important ones by hand.
