Automation
n8n vs Activepieces
Activepieces is the friendlier, genuinely open-source option with a simpler builder — a good fit if a small team will maintain it. n8n is more capable, with better AI tooling and a larger connector library, at the cost of a more restrictive licence and more complexity.
- No affiliate links
- Public pricing only
- Updated by hand
Both let you run automation on your own infrastructure instead of paying per task. The differences are licence, connector coverage and how much the builder assumes you'll write code.
Licence matters more than people expect. Activepieces is MIT for its core, which means agencies can build products on top. n8n's Sustainable Use Licence restricts that.
Side by side
n8n and Activepieces in short.
n8n
Source-available automation with code nodes, AI agents and hundreds of integrations.
- Free
- Community edition free to self-host.
- Paid from
- Cloud from roughly €20/month
Good at
- Largest connector library of the self-hostable tools
- Code nodes and AI agent building blocks
- Large community with published workflow templates
Weak at
- Sustainable Use Licence limits commercial resale
- Builder gets busy on complex workflows
Activepieces
MIT-licensed, no-code automation platform with a clean builder and an extensible piece framework.
- Free
- Free cloud tier and free self-hosting.
- Paid from
- Cloud paid plans from a low monthly fee
Good at
- MIT licence on the core, so you can embed and white-label it
- Simpler interface that non-technical staff can actually maintain
- Pieces are written in TypeScript, so adding your own integration is straightforward
Weak at
- Fewer ready-made integrations
- Smaller community and fewer templates
The differences
Where they actually diverge.
Pick one
Which one fits you.
Choose n8n if
- You need a specific integration that exists in n8n
- AI agents are part of the plan
- Internal use only, so the licence isn't a constraint
Choose Activepieces if
- You want to embed automation into your own product
- Non-technical colleagues will build the flows
- A permissive licence is a hard requirement
When neither is the answer
If nobody on the team wants to own a server, use Make. Self-hosting saves money only when someone's time is genuinely free.
Questions
Common questions.
Can I self-host either for free?
Yes, both. n8n's community edition and Activepieces' community edition are free to run. Enterprise features — SSO, advanced permissions — sit behind paid editions in both.
Which is easier to back up?
Both store workflows and credentials in a database, so a standard Postgres backup covers you. Encrypt credentials at rest and keep the encryption key somewhere separate.
