Cold email
Instantly vs Smartlead
Both let you connect unlimited sending inboxes and both include warm-up, so price per seat is not the deciding factor. Pick Smartlead if you run campaigns for clients and need sub-accounts, white labelling and a proper API; pick Instantly if it's your own pipeline and you want the lead database and inbox in one place.
- No affiliate links
- Public pricing only
- Updated by hand
Cold email tools stopped competing on sending years ago. What separates them now is inbox rotation, how honest the reply detection is, and whether the product is built for one company or for an agency running twenty.
Neither tool fixes deliverability on its own. Domain authentication, a warm-up period measured in weeks and sane daily volumes do most of the work — the software just automates the boring parts.
Side by side
Instantly and Smartlead in short.
Instantly
Cold email sending with built-in warm-up and an add-on B2B lead database.
- Free
- No usable free sending plan — there's a trial rather than a free tier.
- Paid from
- Growth starts around $37/month billed monthly
Good at
- Unlimited connected sending accounts on paid plans, so scaling means buying domains, not seats
- Warm-up is included rather than a separate subscription
- Lead finder and a unified inbox sit inside the same product, so you can go from list to send without exporting
Weak at
- The lead database is a paid add-on and thinner than Apollo's
- Agency features exist but are less complete than Smartlead's sub-account model
Smartlead
Cold email infrastructure aimed at agencies, with white labelling and a full API.
- Free
- No free plan; 14-day trial.
- Paid from
- Basic starts around $39/month billed monthly
Good at
- Unlimited inbox rotation with client sub-accounts and white-labelled reporting
- A documented API and webhooks, so you can push replies into your own CRM
- Master inbox view across every client campaign
Weak at
- No native lead database — you bring your own list from Apollo, Clay or a scrape
- The UI assumes you already know what a sending rotation is
The differences
Where they actually diverge.
Pick one
Which one fits you.
Choose Instantly if
- You're sending for one company and want lists, sending and inbox in one tab
- You want the shortest path from zero to a first campaign
- You'd rather buy a lead add-on than manage a second data subscription
Choose Smartlead if
- You send on behalf of clients and need separate workspaces and branded reports
- You want to pipe replies into your own systems through the API
- Your lists come from Clay or Apollo already
When neither is the answer
If you're sending fewer than 200 emails a week, neither is worth the subscription. Send from your normal inbox by hand and spend the money on a data source instead.
Questions
Common questions.
Does either tool guarantee inbox placement?
No, and be suspicious of anything that claims to. Placement depends on your domain setup (SPF, DKIM, DMARC), how old the domain is, your volume ramp and whether people reply. Both tools automate warm-up and rotation, which helps, but neither controls Google or Microsoft's filters.
Can I use both?
Agencies sometimes do — Instantly for their own pipeline, Smartlead for client work. It's rarely worth it under ten campaigns because you're paying twice for the same sending layer.
Prices are list prices published by each vendor and change often — check the linked pricing pages before you buy. We take no affiliate commission and nobody pays to appear here.
