ActiveCampaign or HubSpot — which should you use?
ActiveCampaign wins on price and automation depth for a small marketing-led team. HubSpot wins once sales, marketing and service all need to share the same records and reporting. ActiveCampaign starts at Plans from roughly $15/month billed annually, scaling with contacts (free tier: No free plan; a free trial only.); HubSpot starts at Starter hubs from roughly $15–20/month per seat, rising sharply at Professional tier (free tier: Free CRM with basic contact management, forms and email sending.). Prices are list prices and change, so check the vendor pages before buying.

ActiveCampaign started as email automation and added a CRM around it. HubSpot started as a CRM and marketing hub and has grown into a suite covering sales, service, CMS and operations. Both now claim the middle ground, but the centre of gravity is different.
The practical split is team size and structure. A founder or small marketing team gets more automation for less money from ActiveCampaign. A company with separate sales and marketing functions that need to see the same contact usually ends up on HubSpot, budget allowing.
Side by side
ActiveCampaign and HubSpot in short.

- No free plan; a free trial only.

Pick one
Which one fits you.
Choose ActiveCampaign if
- You want the deepest automation builder for the price
- Marketing runs the show and sales is small or informal
- Cost per contact matters more than a polished interface
Choose HubSpot if
- Sales and marketing need to share one contact record
- You want a free CRM today with room to add hubs later
- You value a large integration and partner ecosystem
When neither is the answer
If you only need email and light automation, Brevo or Mailerlite cost less than either of these and skip the CRM entirely.
Questions
Common questions.
Can I run ActiveCampaign as my only CRM?
For a small sales team with a simple pipeline, yes. Once you need custom sales stages, forecasting and reporting across a bigger team, most companies outgrow it.
Does HubSpot's free CRM have a catch?
It's a real free product, but you'll hit limits on branding removal, automation and reporting fast, which is exactly the point — it's a funnel into paid hubs.
Which migrates data more easily?
Both import CSVs cleanly. The harder part is always rebuilding automations and pipeline stages by hand, not moving the contact data itself.
Is ActiveCampaign cheaper long term?
Usually, yes, for a marketing-heavy small business. HubSpot's per-seat pricing on Professional tiers tends to overtake ActiveCampaign once you add a few sales users.
Do both support ecommerce?
Both connect to Shopify and WooCommerce. Neither has the ecommerce-specific automation depth of a tool like Klaviyo.
