Lifecycle messaging
Customer.io vs Braze
Customer.io is the right answer for almost any company under about 100 people: event-driven campaigns, published pricing, an interface a marketer can run. Braze is for consumer apps at scale with in-house lifecycle teams and an enterprise budget.
- No affiliate links
- Public pricing only
- Updated by hand
Both send messages triggered by what people do rather than what list they're on. Both cover email, push, in-app and SMS. The difference is scale, price and how much of the platform you'll actually use.
Braze doesn't publish pricing, which is itself the answer to whether it's aimed at you.
Side by side
Customer.io and Braze in short.
Customer.io
Event-driven lifecycle messaging with a visual workflow builder and liquid templating.
- Free
- Free trial rather than a free tier.
- Paid from
- Essentials from roughly $100/month
Good at
- Published pricing and a plan a startup can afford
- Workflow builder with branching, waits and segments that marketers can edit
- Data-warehouse sync and a solid API for developers
Weak at
- Fewer channels than Braze at the top end
- Costs rise with profile counts
Braze
Enterprise customer engagement platform for large consumer apps.
- Free
- None.
- Paid from
- Quote only, typically five to six figures annually
Good at
- Handles very high message volume across email, push, in-app, SMS and WhatsApp
- Canvas journey builder with sophisticated experimentation
- Enterprise governance, permissions and support
Weak at
- Opaque pricing and annual contracts
- Needs dedicated staff to run properly
The differences
Where they actually diverge.
Pick one
Which one fits you.
Choose Customer.io if
- You have engineers who can send events but no lifecycle team
- You need pricing you can approve without procurement
- Email and in-app cover most of your messaging
Choose Braze if
- You send millions of push notifications a month
- Multiple regional teams need governed access
- You need the vendor to sign an enterprise agreement
When neither is the answer
Pre-product-market-fit, a transactional email API plus a spreadsheet of triggers is enough. Lifecycle platforms pay off once you know which behaviours predict retention.
Questions
Common questions.
Do I need a CDP as well?
Not initially. Both can ingest events directly from your app. A CDP earns its place when three or more tools need the same event stream.
What's the cheaper alternative?
For B2B SaaS specifically, Loops or Customer.io's entry tier. For very early products, transactional email triggered from your own code costs almost nothing and covers onboarding.
Prices are list prices published by each vendor and change often — check the linked pricing pages before you buy. We take no affiliate commission and nobody pays to appear here.
